Volunteers prepare for work in East Jerusalem
Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) volunteers Gil & Fran Schultz are gearing up for their placement this fall in East Jerusalem at the Augusta Victoria Hospital (AVH).  In preparation for their assignment, Gil and Fran participated in the Mission Orientation Conference recently held in Toronto.  The conference was designed to prepare individuals mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally for their international placements.

Speaking about the conference, the Schultzes said “the inter-cultural components were outstanding and meeting others going out on various volunteer placements was extremely valuable.  We were able to learn a lot from each other”.

In addition to their administrative and teaching assignments at the Augusta Victoria Hospital in East Jerusalem, Gil and Fran will be assisting with the olive grove operated by the AVH. The hospital, which is located on the Mount of Olives, harvests olives from 800 trees on its property. The grove supplies oil to the hospital. Surplus production is sold to help fund hospital operations. More information about AVH’s olive production can be found at www.lwfjerusalem.org/olive_oil.htm.

Ethiopian refugee arrives in Vancouver
A young refugee originally from Ethiopia arrived at Vancouver International Airport on May 27, where he was reunited with a cousin he had never met. Nessibu was raised in Oromia region of Ethiopia. At the age of 11, he lost his mother and then, six years later, his father was killed because of his political ties. Nessibu quit school and joined a social movement to promote respect for human rights. At 22, after a long hardship, he escaped to Rwanda, where he began seeking asylum, hoping that someday he would find a place where he could rebuild his life in peace and security.

That dream became a reality when Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) assisted with his immigration to Canada. Nessibu says, “After a very difficult life since I was very young, the only hope I always had was to live in a peaceful and stable environment. This was what I longed for since I lost both my parents. I can hardly express how happy I am today to be here.”

CLWR has been assisting refugee resettlement in Canada since 1946. In 2008-09, CLWR helped to bring 38 people to Canada from five countries: Afghanistan, Colombia, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan.
