Programming for the fall? Think CLWR
As congregations across the country gear up for the resumption of regular fall activities, Canadian Lutheran World Relief is ready to serve with a variety of supporting resources.
CLWR Sunday is fast approaching (September 27 for ELCIC congregations; October 18 for LCC congregations). Posters promoting this special day as well as copies of the fall 2009 issue of Partnership should be arriving in your mail within the next week. Additional resources, including worship planning material and a bulletin insert, may be downloaded from the CLWR website (www.clwr.org/Resources/clwrsunday.cfm).
The DVD One Good Thing is suitable for use with a variety of age groups, including confirmation classes, adult study groups and senior Sunday school classes. Congregations with AV projection capability might consider screening the video prior to or after a worship service or show clips during their CLWR Sunday celebrations. The video, which has a running time of 17 minutes, highlights the various facets of CLWR's work, including the We Care program, refugee resettlement and community development. The DVD is available free of charge. Call us at 1.800.661.2597 to arrange for one to be mailed to you.
Sunday school teachers, make note: One Good Thing colour pamphlets highlighting CLWR's work in Peru, Bolivia, India, Mozambique and Zambia are also available. Each pamphlet is country-specific and provides suggested learning activities around themes such as caring for HIV and AIDS patients, educating children and environmental protection. One Good Thing pamphlets are also available free of charge. Order multiple copies for distribution to your class.
Coming later this fall, watch for CLWR's newest resource—One Community. It will provide congregations or groups within congregations with a novel way to raise awareness of and funds for the work of CLWR.
CLWR programming to provide access to safe water
Canadians have such ready access to clean, fresh water that we sometimes forget how precious a resource it is. One billion people around the world lack a safe source of water and using unsafe water is too often deadly. The United Nations estimates that of the 10 million children who die each year, two million succumb to diarrhea induced by water-borne bacterial diseases.
Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is responding through programming underway in India, Mozambique and Zambia. Under the umbrella of our current five-year agreement with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), CLWR is working with its partner, the Lutheran World Federation, in 156 communities in these countries to improve access to safe water. Plans for the 2008-2013 period include the construction of 63 covered wells and new or improved latrines for 57% of the households. Awareness building around hygiene when collecting, storing and using water is also planned with the hope of reaching 80% of the households.
The entire safe water program, if fully implemented, will cost $207,000. For every dollar raised by CLWR towards this goal, CIDA will contribute three. Please consider supporting this initiative. Donations may be made conveniently online at www.clwr.org or by calling toll-free 1.800.661.2597.
