Volunteers load container bound for Mauritania

About 60 volunteers from the lower mainland area of British Columbia gathered in Clearbrook, BC, this week to lend their support to the latest We Care shipment by Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR). Under the direction of the BC Baling Committee and Patrick Stewart, coordinator of CLWR’s donated commodities program, they packed We Care kits and quilts into bales and loaded them into a 20 foot container. At the end of the day, almost 2,340 quilts and blankets, 967 layettes and almost 650 We Care Kits weighing in at 11,500 kg were handled. Twenty bales of commodities were donated from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

The shipment is bound for Mauritania, a country located on the west coast of Africa. Its contents will be received and distributed by CLWR’s partner, Lutheran World Federation–Mauritania.

The annual BC Baling Day event takes place at the MCC warehouse in Clearbrook. Since 2001, the BC Baling Committee has organized 11 shipments. Aside from Mauritania, recipient countries have included Eritrea, East Jerusalem, Malawi, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.

For more information on how you can support the We Care program by either assembling a kit, making a quilt or with a financial donation to defray overseas shipping and warehousing costs, please visit www.clwr.org/WeCare.

New CLWR display debuts at Synod conventions

One Community is the theme of the new Canadian Lutheran World Relief conference and convention display board being debuted this spring and summer at the five synodical conventions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC).  The image featured on the new display board depicts community members from a village in Tete Province, Mozambique, joining together to construct the concrete forms used to line a well.

The image was chosen to reflect the community-based focus of much of CLWR's international development programming that strives to enhance the capacity of people to live in justice, dignity and peace.

The display has already appeared at the Manitoba Northwestern Ontario and British Columbia synod conventions and will be making its way to Camrose, Saskatoon and Toronto for the remaining three assemblies. It will also be present at the LWML Central District convention in Moose Jaw in June and at the Canadian Lutheran Anglican Youth gathering to be held in London, Ontario, in August.

We invite delegates, participants and visitors to these events to drop by and catch up on the latest news and resources available from CLWR.
