Messiah Camrose’s KidFEST dreams big: raises $8,500 for CLWR
The KidFEST (Sunday School) at Messiah Lutheran in Camrose, Alberta, has successfully completed a One Community project for Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR). From monies collected through regular Sunday offerings, the children selected items to purchase for their community. Their choices included two pairs of goats, a flock of chickens, teacher training and a garden.
“To keep the congregation informed about the project, a letter was sent to all parents,” reports Marlys Sorenson, Children’s Ministry Coordinator at Messiah. “We prayed that students and families would be touched by these needs and feel led to contribute additional items.”
Indeed they were. In addition to the $500 raised by KidFEST students, an additional $8,000 was donated. This was more than enough to completely outfit a symbolic community.

Augusta Victoria Hospital to receive We Care shipment
On June 22, a 40-foot container was loaded at CLWR’s Winnipeg warehouse with nearly 11,300 kilos of goods destined for the Augusta Victoria Hospital in East Jerusalem. Staff at the hospital, which is operated by the Lutheran World Federation, had specified quilts and school/children's kits as being the highest priority. This was easy to accommodate given the large influx of quilts received this spring at the warehouse. Included in the shipment were 2,120 We Care school and children’s kits, 500 hygiene kits and 7,075 blankets and quilts.
“It was a relief to have some freight leaving the warehouse,” says Patrick Stewart, coordinator of CLWR’s Donated Commodities program. “But we are still very full and near capacity, and so, if at all possible, I would ask that our dedicated network of quilters hold off sending quilts until the fall.” Children’s and school pack kits are needed though so please keep them coming.
We Care bags for packing kit contents may be ordered by calling CLWR’s toll-free line: 1.800.661.2597. A donation of $5 per bag is suggested to help defray overseas transportation and warehousing costs. A minimum order of five bags is required.
Eastern Synod Assembly supports CLWR
Delegates and visitors to the ELCIC Eastern Synod Assembly, held June24-27 in Toronto, leant their support to CLWR by directing the offering collected at the assembly’s opening service to the agency’s work. Just under $3000 was received.
Delegates were invited to a continental breakfast hosted by CLWR on the Friday morning of the assembly. Over one hundred persons set their alarms early to attend. Presentations by Bob Granke and Tom Brook highlighted some of the ongoing work of CLWR.
The last of the ELCIC synod conventions will be held this coming weekend in Saskatoon. Delegates to the Saskatchewan Synod convention are invited to a reception being hosted by CLWR following the opening worship, as well as to stop by the CLWR display.
