Alternative Trade

A local connection with global impact (February 2009)

When Ellen Gleich was a child, the idea of helping people in need meant travelling to far-flung locales to serve as a missionary.

"I remember seeing the TV ads for UNICEF and a stirring desire to serve those in need began to take root. Little did I know that when I grew up I would be in the very same town where I saw the ad, working to help enrich those same lives."

Gender Equality

Finding their voice (March 2009)

Before working with CLWR’s partner, Lutheran World Service - India (LWSI), women living in South 24 Paraganas were often confined to their homes. They were frightened to speak up and endured a lot of pressure from their male counterparts. It wasn’t easy for LWSI to involve the women but the staff’s dedication has paid off.

HIV and AIDS

Rejoicing in new life (April 2009)

As Christians around the globe celebrate the miracle of the resurrection this Eastertide, we continue to seek the new life that springs forth from the brokenness in our world today. It is this assurance that out of despair and darkness we witness the risen Christ that gives us hope for renewal amidst human suffering all around us.

Canadian Lutheran World Relief witnesses to this renewal in its commitment to helping make life better for those in need around the world. Glimpses of new life are revealed in the stories of those whose lives have been touched by this work. Alice's story is just one of many.

Refugees

A refugee family reunited (June 2009)

Every year on June 20 the world honours the courage, resilience and strength of refugees. On this seventh anniversary of the United Nations-designated World Refugee Day, thousands of organizations in hundreds of countries will come together to focus global attention not only on the plight of refugees and the causes of their exile, but also on their determination and will to survive and on the contributions they make to their host communities.

The theme for 2009 is "real people, real needs." The story of Epiphania and her family illustrates the life-giving nature of refugee sponsorship supported by congregations and community groups throughout Canada.
