Artisans continue their work in the aftermath of Thai coup

Concern for artisans who supply goods for CLWR’s Four Corners alternative trade organization was eased with recent reports from project coordinator Sao Seng Suk following last week’s military coup in Thailand. Suk reports that there has been little disruption in Chiang Mai by events taking place in Bangkok, which is approximately 700 kilometres to the southeast.

CLWR supports Karen refugees living in Thailand by connecting them with markets for their goods. These include: hand-made pressed paper products, lacquerware, and mango wood vases and candle holders.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank to offer three food study tours in 2007

Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) seeks to host study tours that are transformative experiences for both first-time travelers to less developed countries and people who already have a demonstrated passion for justice issues. Tours focus on issues of agriculture, food security and food aid. Tour participants will learn about the work of many of CFGB’s partner agencies, and experience village life and local culture firsthand during home stays with project participants.

Upcoming tours include:
  • India and Bangladesh: February 1-20, 2007
  • Zimbabwe and Malawi: February 15 - March 6, 2007
  • Honduras: February 16 - March 3, 2007 – youth tour
  • A special youth tour (ages 18-24) will follow Honduras’ “food justice highway" from seaport to village. Participants will visit the cities of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, live in a local village in southern Honduras for three days, and visit farms, plantations, factories and places of political, historic and cultural interest. Emphasis is placed on building a strong understanding of the relationship between hunger and social justice issues in the Central American context.
