CLWR's Involvement in Burma

Description of Program

This project supports a reconciliation programme among ethnic minorities of Burma, many of whom have been forced to live outside of Burma. The project provides opportunities for Burmese ethnic communities to consult and negotiate between themselves as a means to achieve a peaceful transition to a democratic society.

The main objectives of the project are to:
  • Strengthen the Burmese democracy movement;
  • Improve grassroots participation in the political process;
  • Support the strengthening of civil society in Burma;
  • Develop broad policies and priorities in negotiating the transition to a democratic government in Burma.
The peace-building project is a component of the National Reconciliation Programme, which currently has five component parts and involves many organizations:
  • Peace (Consensus) Building, CIDA/CLWR;
  • Special Needs Group, Danish/Burma Working Group;
  • Conflict Resolution, International IDEA Sweden;
  • Human Resources Development-Building a Civil Society in Burma, Trocars, Ireland;
  • Policy Analysis and Development, Norway Burma Fund.
The anticipated results of the project are:
  • peaceful coexistence of ethnic minorities in Burma;
  • political process involving all sectors of the Burmese society;
  • orderly transition to a democratic and accountable government in Burma
