Canadian Lutheran World Relief supports a variety of projects in Zambia. Each of these contributes to building up the capacity of local people and their communities to address some aspect of poverty. By engaging any one of these projects Canadians are supporting an entire program designed to make poverty history. Follow the links below to learn more about specific projects within Zambia.
  • Leadership and Organizational Training Projects

  • Human Rights Projects

  • HIV/AIDS
  • In Zambia the spread of HIV/AIDS is worsened by poverty, negative cultural beliefs and practices such as widow inheritance, sexual cleansing, and high illiteracy rates in the target areas CLWR works in. The effects of HIV/AIDS are that it mostly affects productive people, increases number of orphans and overburdens health services. In Katete, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) comprise 18% of the population, of which 53% are females and 47% are males.

Canadian Lutheran World Relief supports HIV/AIDS initiatives that involve education prevention and support services to HIV/AIDS affected persons in the Katete area.

    Project: Train an HIV/AID Worker
125 people need to be trained annually to facilitate HIV/AIDS prevention programs.
Cost: $50 is the estimated cost of training one HIV/AIDS worker.

Cost: $6 is the estimated cost of helping one person through a trained healthcare worker.

  • Education Projects
  • In Zambia Canadian Lutheran World Relief is providing adults and children in Katete area with improved access to basic education and literacy.

Project: Reading and Writing for a Better Future
200 men and women will be educated to read and write in their native Chichewa language. Give an adult the dream of a future through education.
Cost: $20 is the estimated cost of offering one adult the opportunity of education for one year.
