Climate finance commitment
Dear [MP Name],
I’m a constituent in [community/riding], and I’m writing to urge the Government of Canada to renew and strengthen Canada’s international climate finance beyond 2026. Canada’s current international climate finance commitment is $5.3B (2021–2026), and it is nearing its scheduled end.
As a Lutheran, I’ve been part of Canada’s global climate response myself through my church, [church name]. Through a campaign produced by Canadian Lutheran World Relief, we’ve learned about the impacts of climate change around Lake Chad and how Canada is helping communities there respond.
The world is facing many challenges, but climate change is continuing to escalate, and communities on the frontlines are already living with the impacts. Around Lake Chad, an entire ecosystem is collapsing.
But I’ve learned how Canada’s support is funding practical, locally led solutions: restoring land, reforesting, and improving sustainable farming and water management—work designed in consultation with families in Cameroon and Chad and carried out alongside local farmers. I’ve learned how effective this approach is at changing the future for entire communities. And I know that this work at Lake Chad through CLWR is only one example of how Canada’s climate funding is providing transformational support for communities on the frontlines of climate change.
As the next Federal budget is assembled, it would be a tragedy for Canada to reduce its commitment to this critical work.
I’m asking you to:
1. Support a new multi-year international climate and nature finance commitment beyond 2026.
2. Maintain a strong focus on adaptation and nature-based solutions that help communities build resilience.
I would appreciate a reply outlining how you and your caucus will support Canada’s next climate finance commitment.
Sincerely,
